Somalia signs capacity development agreement with Japan to promote youth employment

Nairobi, 19 October 2023 – The Ministries of Planning, Investment and Economic Development, Commerce and Industry, and Labor and Social Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia have signed a capacity development agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to promote the employment of young and vulnerable people in Somalia.

“This agreement is a significant step towards creating a more prosperous and equitable Somalia,” said Mohamed Shire, Director-General of the MoPIED. “By investing in the capacity development of our youth, we are investing in the future of our country.”

The agreement, which took place today in Nairobi, was signed by the Director-Generals of the MoPIED, Mr Mohamed Shire, Commerce and Industry, Mr Mohamed Dalmar and Labor and Social Affairs, Yusuf Isak. The Federal Government of Somalia aims to provide young people with the skills and training necessary to enter the workforce and contribute to economic growth by focusing on capacity development.

“We are committed to bridging the gap between education and employment, ensuring that youth and vulnerable groups have the tools they need to succeed,” said Yusuf Isak, Director-General of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. “This partnership with JICA will help us achieve that goal.”

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, which will also be involved in the program, expressed its gratitude to the government of Japan and JICA for their commitment to the cause.

“This agreement will pave the way for a brighter future for Somalia’s youth, fostering economic growth and social stability,” said Mohamed Dalmar, Director-General of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The Federal Government of Somalia is committed to working with its partners to promote sustainable development and build a brighter future for all Somalis. With this partnership with JICA, the government is taking a significant step towards achieving that goal.
