MoPIED – Somalia and UNHCR discuss long-term solutions for displaced communities

The Minister of Planning, Investment, and Economic Development of Somalia, H.E. Mohamud Abdirahman Beenebeene, met with a high-level delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) led by Ambassador Mohamed Abdi Affey, UNHCR’s Special Envoy for the East and Horn of Africa.

The primary objective of the discussion was to identify long-term solutions for the displaced communities within the nation. Both parties emphasised the urgent need to develop return areas and intensify efforts to address the obstacles encountered by Somalia’s internally displaced persons (IDPs).

In accordance with the goals of the National Durable Solutions Strategy, the aspiration to lift one million people from displacement was a key shared vision during the meeting. This ambitious objective highlights the commitment of the Somali government and UNHCR to work together to improve the opportunities and living conditions of affected communities.

Minister Mohamud Abdirahman Beenebeene thanked the UNHCR delegation for their sustained support and cooperation in finding viable and sustainable solutions for those displaced by conflict and the recurrent drought. Ambassador Mohamed Abdi Affey praised the Somali government’s dedication and reaffirmed UNHCR’s commitment to providing assistance and expertise in attaining the government’s objectives.

The meeting concluded with a renewed sense of purpose, signifying a significant step towards the shared objective of bringing about positive changes in the lives of Somalia’s communities impacted by displacement.
